Biography Martin Schoeller

Martin Schoeller was born in Munich, Germany, in 1968. He began his career as a photographer by assisting Annie Leibovitz from 1993 to 1996. After his departure, he focused on his freelance career by shooting portraits of people he met on the street, which attracted widespread recognition.

Since 1998 his images have been published in such esteemed publications as GQ, Esquire, Rolling Stone, National Geographic, and TIME, among many others. In 1999 he began working for The New Yorker as a contributing portrait photographer alongside Richard Avedon.

Schoeller’s photographs have been exhibited all over the globe and are included in the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.

Schoeller has previously published two books with teNeues: Close Up in 2005 and Identical in 2012.

He lives in New York.
